Frequently Asked Questions

Basics and Mechanism

Q1. What is the difference between a residential battery and a low-voltage grid-scale BESS?

A. The purpose and mechanism are fundamentally different. A residential battery is designed for "self-consumption and power outage preparedness" and does not connect to the utility grid (or prioritizes self-consumption). A low-voltage grid-scale BESS, on the other hand, is a commercial facility intended to "connect to the power grid, participate in the frequency regulation market, and generate revenue." Installation costs, capacity, and regulations differ significantly from residential units.

Q2. Can it be used for self-consumption or as an emergency power source during outages?

A. This equipment is dedicated to grid connection (grid-scale use) and does not support self-consumption during power outages. It serves a different purpose from residential or industrial batteries designed for power outage preparedness. If you require backup power, please consider a separate dedicated system.

Q3. What is the frequency regulation market? Is it complicated?

A. The frequency regulation market is a market through which transmission system operators (the grid management division of electric utilities) procure the "adjustment capability" needed to stabilize the power grid. Compensation (standby compensation) is paid to battery operators for maintaining a state of readiness — "available for charging or discharging at any time." Landowners are not required to be directly involved in the market participation process; REVIX JAPAN and the aggregator manage all operations.

Q4. What are the FY2026 regulatory reforms? Will they have an impact?

A. The frequency regulation market will transition to day-ahead trading starting in FY2026. This reform shifts bidding from weekly/monthly cycles to a day-ahead basis. The systems provided by REVIX JAPAN are equipped with operational frameworks that comply with this reform. However, the reforms also include revisions to price caps and other parameters that may affect revenue levels — details are explained in our materials.

Land and Installation

Q5. How much land area is required?

A. Approximately 6 tsubo (around 20 m²) is the general guideline, though additional space may be required considering the service entrance pole, fence, and working area. Requirements vary depending on the shape and surroundings of the land, so please consult us first.

Q6. Can it be installed on agricultural land?

A. Installing on agricultural land requires a farmland conversion procedure under the Agricultural Land Act. Conversion is generally not permitted for Class 1 farmland (prime agricultural land), and eligibility varies by land classification. We provide guidance tailored to each situation, so please consult us first.

Q7. Can it be installed in an urbanization control area?

A. Installation in an urbanization control area is subject to development permit regulations. Requirements vary depending on the scale of the BESS, its classification under the Electricity Business Act, and site area. REVIX JAPAN reviews local regulatory requirements before providing guidance.

Q8. How loud is it? Can it be installed in a residential area?

A. The maximum noise level of the battery equipment is approximately 75 dB per specifications. However, noise at the site boundary can be kept within regulatory limits depending on the installation location, the use of sound-barrier walls, and the distance from the boundary. Installation in a residential area requires a design that meets zoning-specific noise standards (e.g., 45 dB during daytime in Type 1 residential zones). We propose appropriate countermeasures tailored to individual conditions.

Revenue and Contracts

Q9. What is the lease fee? Is it guaranteed?

A. Lease fees vary depending on the location, area, and grid conditions of the land. While we may present an illustrative calculation of approximately 40,000 yen per month, this is a reference figure only and not a confirmed amount. Actual lease fees are determined through individual condition negotiations. Note that lease payments are linked to the equipment's operational revenue, and significant declines in market revenue may affect payments. Please refer to the contract for details.

Q10. Can I cancel mid-way through the 15-year contract?

A. Early termination is governed by the terms specified in the contract. In general, early termination at the landowner's discretion may incur a cancellation penalty. Please confirm the details before signing the contract.

Q11. Who owns the equipment?

A. In the landowner (land lease) model, the equipment is owned by REVIX JAPAN or the equipment investor. In the investor / equipment-ownership model, the purchaser holds ownership. Details vary depending on the contract structure.

Q12. What happens with equipment removal and site restoration?

A. Upon termination of the lease agreement, the equipment is removed and the land is restored to its original condition. The cost of removal is in principle borne by REVIX JAPAN (or the equipment owner), though this may vary based on contract terms.

Agency and Referrals

Q13. Can I refer a landowner I know?

A. Yes, referrals are welcome. For information on our referral and intermediary compensation program, please see the REVIX Agency Program (REVIX Certified Agency) page or contact us.
